I would often visit the library in the evening after my office hours, but mostly on a Saturday in the afternoon as it used to be a half-day office those days. In my early twenties, I became a member of the British Council Library which was a few minutes’ walk from my office. Never in my life did I forget their meanings. I remember I chanced upon in that dictionary itself the word ‘sadist’, the answer to the clue of 25a, and ‘sadism’ that very year. That happened in 1973 when I was studying in Class VIII. The habit of randomly going through the dictionary started ever since one was purchased for me for the first time. I learnt from the net that transept, the answer to the clue of 23a, has been derived from two Latin words, namely, trans meaning across, beyond or through and septum meaning enclosure or wall. While Edward, Edmund and Edgar are derived from old English meaning ‘rich guardian’, ‘rich protector’ and ‘rich spear’ respectively, Theodore comes from ancient Greek meaning ‘gift of God’. Ed is also the diminutives of Edmund, Edgar and Theodore.
I was aware of Ed, one of the two men forming part of wordplay to the clue of 3a, as a diminutive of Edward, but I was inquisitive this time to know whether it is also a diminutive of other names.
